Too far away to join? No worries! We offer “Distant Learning” for out of area haumana (students). If you live in Florida or far far away, we are all Ohana, and nobody gets left behind!
Although the ideal is to learn in Hawaii, I’ve never been that fortunate. My hula journey started first in California, 2 Auntie’s from Hawaii. Followed by a Halau in Asugi Army base in Japan, where my Alaka’i still teaches.
I understand all too well the idea that having a passion for hula and the culture doesn’t always mean you’re Hawaiian, or get to learn in the islands. You’re welcome to interview for our Distant Learning program.
How and where do you begin?
Email Kumu a request to join. An interview will be scheduled with Kumu Pu’uwai to determine if her schedule is open for new haumana under this program. If accepted, you’ll be given access to a private page, videos, skype sessions, and an invitation to attend class quarterly (or as often as possible). You’ll be invited to perform @ our annual Hoike Recital in the spring of each year. Upon completion of your graduation requirements and first year in Halau, you’ll be given a Hawaiian name.
